Dolce Idea, with three branches around the city, make supremely good chocolate, which has won several international awards “for its seriousness and its goodness” (if you ask, they’ll probably give you a well-produced booklet in Italian and English, telling you all about themselves, as well as the history of the brown stuff). Look out too for chocolate sculptures in their windows, such as a 3-dimensional model of the entire Bay of Naples.

Also various other locations around the city, http://www.gay-odin.it Gay Odin (named after its founder Isidore Odin and his assistant Onorina Gay, with whom he fell in love) sells a similar range of excellent chocolate, including a delicious variety made with chillies, and models of Vesuvius, attractively boxed.

Caffè Mexico, piazza Dante 86, T 081-5499330. Mon-Sat 0730-2030. An excellent café selling a good selection of beans, all roasted on the premises.

Good delicatessens and excellent fruit and vegetables are everywhere in and around Naples.

Tropical Fruits, via Montesanto 6, T 081-5801006. Mon-Sat 0800-1400, 1600-2000. A sort of international healthfood shop with a difference, Tropical Fruits sells everything from Chinese beer to hummous to tomato ketchup and just about everything imaginable in between, including some Italian delicacies.

Two shops right next to each other on via B Croce both have an extraordinary selection of flavoured and shaped pastas, many of which hang outside the shops, completely covering the walls. They also have a good variety of olive oils, limoncello and other high- quality local produce.

La Bottega della Pasta, vico D’Afflitto 41, T 081-410006. Tue-Sat 0930-1400, 1600-2000, Sun 0930-1400, closed Mon. For a truly authentic fresh pasta La Bottega della Pasta is hard to beat. A delicious range of produce is made adjacent to the shop and sold by weight. It should keep until you get home.
