The marketing line for Gelateria Scimmia is, “The gelateria that’s in the hearts of all Neapolitans.” Its produce must be in quite a lot of their stomachs too, because it does indeed have a good reputation around these parts. The bigger branch on piazza Carità is particularly good. The other, on piazza Trieste e Trento, is also a café, and serves good cakes, though not always the biggest or most original choices of ice-cream.

Fantasia Gelati, there are three branches of this reliably good gelateria: via Cilea 80, T 081-5607001; via Toledo 381, T 081-5511212 and piazza Vanvitelli 22, T 081-5788383. All Mon-Sun 0700-0000.

Chiquitos, via Mergellina. In front of the Funicolare, no phone. Chiquitos is one of the chalets opposite Mergellina Port and as such you might not expect much from it. Actually, however, it sells great ice-cream, and has an impressive range. Specialities include Mars and Profiterol, the latter for those who like their chocolate ice-cream to be properly chocolatey. Chalet Ciro nearby is also excellent, but its reputation means long queues.

Soave, via Scarlatti 130, T 081-5567411. Mon-Sat 0800-1330, 1630-1900. Soave also sells cheeses from a room at the back but most come for its ice-creams, which are excellent.

Otranto, via Scarlatti 78, T 081-5587498. 0930-2300, closed Wed. Some of Naples’ most exquisite ice-cream can be found here in the heart of Vomero’s passeggiata territory. There also do very good ice-cream-filled cakes and pastries.

Bougainvillea, corso Italia 16, T 081-8781364. 0830-0000, closed Mon winter. Bougainvillea is an overwhelming place. It claims to have “over 72 different flavours” but on a good day you might count a hundred. It’s very hard to find one that isn’t absolutely delicious. They even do slim-line ice-cream, sugar-free and low in fat. Remember, though, that you’re supposed to be on holiday.

Bar di Maoi, piazza Antica Reggia, Ischia Porto, T 081-991870. 0730-0000 or later. At the southeast corner of Ischia’s port this gelateria sells very good ice-cream and is almost always busy.

Il Pianeta del Gelato, via Lorenzo d’Amalfi 5, T 089-871309. 0600-0000. Amalfi aficionados claim this place does the world’s best ice-cream. It’s not cheap and the choice of flavours is limited, but it is pretty good.
