Tickets
Naples has a single (though not entirely simple) ticket system for all its public transport. Tickets must be purchased before boarding buses or trains, and must be validated. You can get them at any tabacchi (these all display a large T sign outside), stations and at many newsstands. Its worth buying a few tickets and saving them until you need them.
Tickets must be validated when you get on buses: place the end with the arrow into the stamping machine (there are usually two on each bus at the front and back). Your ticket will be printed with the date and time, and is valid on buses, trams, funiculars and the metro for 90 minutes or more from this time (though, confusingly, only for one funicular journey). When you use your ticket to go through a barrier, as on the metro, it will be stamped for you.
There are two types of tickets: GiraNapoli covers the city and Unico goes further afield. If you simply ask for un biglietto (or due biglietti etc) you will get a GiraNapoli ticket. These tickets cost 0.77 each but its also possible to buy a day-ticket for 2.32. Unico tickets come in different flavours: Zone 1 to Zone 5, covering progressively wider areas. They cost between 1.29 and 2.84, and are valid for 100 (zone 1) up to 180 minutes (zone 5). Unico tickets cover almost all forms of public transport in Naples and the surrounding areas, and can be useful for trips to Pompeii or Sorrento for example (Unico Fascia 1 tickets cover Pozzuoli, Fascia 2 also covers Cuma and Baia). Day versions of these are also available (un biglietto giornaliero), and are usually what you will get if you ask for a return (andante e ritorno) since they cost double the single price.
