Maggio dei Monumenti: one of the most successful initiatives of Mayor Bassolino, Maggio dei Monumenti, an idea started in 1994, is now cemented in the Neapolitan calendar. The concept is that the buildings of the city should be opened up to the public during this month. Tours are given, exhibitions are held and special events take place such as dance performances and concerts, especially at weekends. Each year theres a slightly different theme. The month is stretched now, and usually starts on the last weekend in April and continues until the first in June. Much is free and it helps make May the busiest month of the year in the city. Ask at tourist information for some recommendations or check http://www.napoli.com for a list of events in English. Festivalbar: (May-Sep) televised concerts around Italy, often starting or finishing in piazza del Plebiscito. The Naples concert is free and usually attracts big international stars as well as the Italian stalwarts. The 2002 concert included The Red Hot Chilli Peppers, Alanis Morisette, Simple Minds and Sophie Ellis Bextor in its line-up.
