A centre of Italian music for hundreds of years, Naples still has an excellent classical music culture. Other than the obvious (opera and large-scale classical concerts at the Teatro di San Carlo), however, you may need to scratch below the surface to find it. Opera is the musical form that most neatly fits the Neapolitan psyche. Born out of Baroque exuberance and love of elaborate theatricality, Naples is one of its most natural homes. Neapolitan opera went through its golden period in the 17th and 18th centuries, when a dividing line was drawn between serious and comic opera. Naples excelled at the latter and became the centre of the genre. The citys most famous composer, however, Alessandro Scarlatti, was an exponent of opera seria, with its grandiose da capo arias. The Associazione Scarlatti organize a good programme of chamber music in various venues, much of it in the Teatro delle Palme. There is also an excellent small local baroque scene, based around the Capella della Pietà de Turchini. Other concerts can often be heard at the Lutheran Church, the Anglican Church and the Goethe Institute. The Ravello Concerts are the pick of the various music festivals and seasons in the area, both for quality and setting.
