Donna Margherita, vico II Alabardieri 4-6, Chiaia, T 081-400129. Mon-Sun 1230-1500. In a slightly more picturesque setting than most Neapolitan restaurants, complete with palm-fringed garden, Donna Margherita serves a good mix of pasta and fish dishes alongside decent pizzas. There is usually a choice of two set menus (two courses plus mineral water) for 6.20. Umberto, via Alabardieri 30/31, Chiaia, T 081-418555. Tue-Sun 1230-1600, 1900-0100. Excellent pizzas and a good range of antipasti (including seafood salad and a mixed plate of fried Neapolitan delicacies) are the highlights of this smart restaurant. Alongside all the Neapolitan favourites there is a good choice of more original pizza toppings, and if you make up another good one for them they may put it in their Proposta da Voi (proposed by you) section. Theres even a pizza Gobaciov (sic) (with cream, salmon and provola), presumably a reference to his head
La Cantina di Albi Cocca, via Ascensione 6, Chiaia, T 081-411658. Tue-Sat 1200-1500, 2015-0000, Sun 1200-1500. Dont let the large bright yellow signs outside put you off. Inside is a charming restaurant with excellent food and good service. Better-known for its extensive wine and beer menu (its worth coming for this alone), the food here is also delicious. A huge range of pastas (try the orecchiette with chillies, olives and cherry tomatoes) can be followed by a good choice of meat, fish and vegetables. And youll probably get bruschetta to start with as a part of your cover charge. In the evenings it can fill up and it may be worth booking, but at lunchtime you can expect relative peace and quiet. Vini e Cucina, corso V Emanuele 762, T 081-660302. Mon-Sun 1030-1530, 1900-2330. Opposite Mergellina railway station, this is a good place for traditional Neapolitan food: the pasta is reasonable and the seafood is better. But save some room for the torta Caprese (dense chocolate and hazelnut cake) which is exquisite. The house white wine is best avoided. La Botte, vico Satriano 8, Chiaia, T 081-7647337. Mon-Sat 1330-1500, 2000-2300. Half wine bar, half trattoria, this atmospheric little place does a good selection of food to go with your wine, from snacks to a full-blown meal. Trattoria da Antonio, vico II Alabardieri 30, Chiaia, T 081-407147. Mon-Sat 1200-1600, 1930-0100. This small and simple friendly trattoria does a good range of traditional Neapolitan fare. A generous bowl of pasta and lentils with wine is only 5. Vinarium, via Cappella Vecchia 7, Chiaia, T 081-7644114. Mon-Fri 1030-1430, Mon-Sat 1900-0230. A busy and informal atmosphere helps make this a very pleasant place to eat and drink. The food is simple rather than inspired though there are some decent salads and rice dishes. The range of wines is far from simple, however, and the opening hours are very sociable. Trattoria da Cicciotto, Calata Ponticello a Marechiato, Posillipo, T 081-5751165. Mon-Sun 1200-1600, 2000-0100. Spilling onto the street right by the sea in Marechiaro, this is a popular and friendly spot a world away from the rigours of Naples. Traditional Neapolitan food with some excellent fish dishes. Matozzi, via Filangieri 16, T 081-416378. Mon-Sat 1300-1500, 2000-0000. The antipasti here are nearly as generous as the pizza toppings, which are delicious if a little on the heavy side. If youre up to the challenge, try the excellent frittura all'italiana.
