Dotted Line

Matozzi, via Filangieri 16, T 081-416378. Mon-Sat 1300-1500, 2000-0000. The antipasti here are nearly as generous as the pizza toppings, which are delicious if a little on the heavy side. If you’re up to the challenge, try the excellent frittura all'italiana.

Gastronomia L.u.i.s.e, via Santa Caterina a Chiaia 68, T 081-417735. Mon-Sat 0800-2030, Sun 0930-1430. Right on piazza dei Martiri this is good for Neapolitan fast food: savoury pastries, fritture, pre-cooked pasta etc. Pick and choose from a counter and eat in or take-away.

€€ Acunzo, via D Cimarosa 64, T 081-5785362. Mon-Sat 1300-1500, 1930-2330. Serving pizzas alongside traditional Neapolitan fare, this is a decent spot for a quick bite of lunch on your way to the Certosa San Martino. Apparently Jack Lemmon and Marcello Lippi have both done so before.

€€ Trattoria Vanvitelli, piazza Vanvitelli 9c, T 081-5563015. Mon-Sun 1200-1530, 1800-0100. Despite its pleasant tree-lined courtyard at the back, this restaurant is a bit too big to have much character. The fixed-price 3-course menu is good, however, and at €7.75, very good value. They also double as a pizzeria.

Osteria Donna Teresa, via Kerbaker 58, T 081-5567070. Mon-Sat 1200-1500, 1800-2300. This small, plain restaurant has a limited choice but good, solid Neapolitan food. A pasta dish (usually from a choice of two), a main course and a drink will cost you €9 and you’ll leave feeling very full. It can feel a little hurried though, and without any Italian you might struggle.

€€ La Cucina, largo San Paolo 19, T 081-5269060. 1230-1530, 2000-0000, closed Tue. One of Pozzuoli’s best-known restaurants, in a good position right by the port.

€€ Don Antonio, via Magazzini 20, T 081-5267941. Mon-Sun 1230-1500, 1900-0000. Downmarket but delicious, this is an excellent trattoria serving good and very cheap traditional dishes.

Da Ciuffello, via Dicearchia 11, T 081-5269397. Mon-Sun 1200-1530, 2000-0100. Pozzuoli is well-known for its seafood. Trattoria Da Ciuffello, between the Cumana station and the port, is a good place to try the local fish soup, and has some outside tables.

€€ Trattoria il Buco, iI rampa Marina Piccola 5, T 081-8782354. 1200-1430, 1900-2330, closed Wed. Just off piazza San Antonio, down some steps under an arch. This is maybe as near as you’ll get in Sorrento to a traditional trattoria. Built into the Porto Marinella, one of the ancient gates of the town (c700AD), service can be less than attentive but the food is good.
