Naples and its surrounding area offer no shortage of possibilities for souvenir-buying. Specialities include the liqueur Limoncello, stationery, ceramics and mozzarella, and at Christmas people come from all over Italy to buy figures and props for Nativity scenes from via San Gregorio Armeno in the Centro Storico. In Naples, the largely pedestrianized via Toledo is probably the main shopping street, though Vomero is also an important commercial area. At the pedestrianized end (near piazza Trieste e Trento) via Toledo takes on a carnival air at busy times, particularly Saturday mornings, live bands and clowns entertaining the wandering crowds. Slightly smarter shops can be found along via Chaia and into piazza dei Martiri. The area around via dei Tribunali and Spaccanapoli has plenty of smaller, family- owned shops, selling everything from pasta and paper cups to entire altarpieces. Via San Sebastiano has workshops and shops making and selling musical instruments. Via Pignasecca and the Montesanto area have lots of places selling good, cheap food and household goods, as well as an excellent market.
Most shops close for siesta between about 1300 and 1600. Many food shops close on Thursday afternoons.
