Sport in Naples is dominated by football, and the fortunes of the Napoli side are followed as keenly here as in any other city on the planet. Neapolitans feel they have a lot to prove, especially over their hated northern rivals, and football is the most obvious outlet for their passionate sentiments. Despite the massive 80,000-seater Stadio San Paolo and memories of Maradona, the glory days of Napoli are proving hard to repeat in the last few seasons they have bounced up and down between Serie A and Serie B. In 2002 they narrowly missed out on promotion back to Serie A despite large amounts of money spent on the squad. It may be some time before theyre back up there fighting for the scudetto (championship). Outside the city sport is dominated by the sea most places have shacks by the waterfront renting out boats of all shapes and sizes and you can try sailing and diving courses from the islands.
