Many tours (most of them free) take place during Maggio dei Monumenti. Often these are of buildings closed to the public for the rest of the year.
Interesting, and slightly alternative, often historically themed tours around and outside the city (usually every Sunday) are organized by Legambiente, an ecological group working to improve the life of the city.
