Summer in the city can be oppressively hot so it is probably best to do as most Neapolitans do: avoid it. In August the city is semi- deserted and many shops and restaurants are closed. On the other hand, the coast and islands buzz with visitors and festivals at this time. Otherwise, theres not really a bad time to visit. Winter can be rainy, but seldom for long, and, if youre lucky, the wonderfully fresh crisp clear days will give views that stretch for twice as far as those in summer. Concerts, fireworks and the via San Gregorio Armeno crowds make Naples a lively place at Christmas and New Year too. But spring, generally warm and sunny with flower-sprinkled hills, and autumn with its still-warm sea, are the best bets.
