WXOU Radio, 558 Hudson St,T1-212 206 0381. Subway 1, 9 to Christopher St. A low-key, non-descript neighbourhood bar with no pretensions. Come here when you want to get away from the scene.

Ace Bar, 531 Fifth St,T1-212 979 8476. Subway L to 1st Av, 6 to Astor Pl. Pool tables and dart boards make this a welcoming, anything-goes drinking dive in the East Village. The booths in the back are more relaxed.

Angel’s Share, 8 Stuyvesant St, 2nd Flr,T1-212 777 5415. Subway 6 to Astor Pl. Enter via an unassuming Japanese restaurant, through a door with a paper sign and discover the best kept secret in Manhattan. A friendly crowd sip Asian-themed cocktails under a faux fresco.

Bar Veloce, 175 Second Av,T1-212 260 3200. Subway L to 3rd Av. This tiny, slick, narrow wine bar is the most sophisticated place to drink in the East Village. Come here to sample some wine, to romance a date or to eat one of the delicious paninis.

Fat Black Pussycat, 130 W 3rd St, between MacDougal and Sixth Av,T1-212 533 4790. Subway A, C, E, F, S, V to W 4th St. A pub at the front and a lounge at the back make this carefree bar a local favourite for its diversity and happy-go-lucky crowd of drinkers.

Il Posto Accanto, 190 E 2nd St,T1-212 228 3562. Subway F, V to Lower East Side-2nd Av. This welcoming little wine bar will charm you with its selection of bottles and its friendly owner.

Marion’s Continental Restaurant & Lounge, 354 Bowery,T1-212 475 7621. Subway 6 to Bleecker St. Crazy tiki nights and fabulous Martinis make this old-world kitsch hangout better for its bar than its food.

McSorley’s Old Ale House, 15 East 7th St,T1-212 473 9148. Subway N, R, W to 8th St, 6 to Astor Pl. Spit and sawdust, down and dirty, check your pretensions at the door and don’t dare to order a Martini. Opened in 1854, this is the oldest continually operational bar in New York and the only one that can claim ‘Abraham Lincoln drank here’. Light or dark ales are served in a friendly but no-nonsense atmosphere.

Nuyorican Poets Café, 236 E 3rd St,T1-212 780 9386. Subway F, V to Lower East Side-2nd Av. Talented wordsmiths slam poetry in this hippy-ish setting. Beginners shouldn’t shy away from the microphone.
