Bar at the Gramercy Park Hotel, 2 Lexington Av,T1-212 475 4320. Subway 6 to 23rd St. This revamped classic neighbourhood bar is old school in the front and velvety, shabby-chic seductive in the candlelit back lounge area.

Beauty Bar, 1 E 14th St,T1-212 539 1389. Subway L to 3rd Av. Cool, kitschy and usually packed, this bar, made out of a 1960s beauty parlour, has vintage hairdryers to sit under and you can get a manicure while you’re having a drink.

Flatiron Lounge, 37 W 19th St,T1-212 727 7741. Subway 1, 9 to 18th St. There are potent cocktails and a sophisticated vibe at this sexy art deco bar.

Jazz Standard, 116 E 27th St,T1-212 576 2232. Subway 6 to 28th St. A great place to hear jazz. Wynton and Branford Marsalis play downstairs at the Blue Smoke barbecue restaurant but so do many lesser known talented musicians. Call ahead to reserve a table.

Molly’s, 287 3rd Av,T1-212 889 3361. Subway 6 to 23rd St. A neighbourhood pub with sawdust on the floor, friendly bartenders and jealous locals who prefer to keep Molly’s all to themselves.
