New Yorks nightlife comes in many forms and lasts from dusk till dawn. Although the bar-lounge-club combination continues to be popular, mixing music and cocktails with a mellow vibe, New York is also currently witnessing a revival in large-scale clubbing. Venues, where hundreds can dance, are opening in abandoned warehouses in Chelsea around 10th and 11th Avenues, with owners hoping to attract an older, more sophisticated clientele whose party spirit isnt fuelled by drugs.
Elsewhere, youll find flashy designer hotel bars, peanut-tossing, beer-guzzling dive bars and low-key jazz lounges. Head to the Lower East Side and East Village for local DJs and live bands or to the Meatpacking District for everything from biker hangouts to wine bars. Uptown is generally quieter, but it does have some rowdy sports bars and a few chic clubs. Irish pubs, some of better quality than others, can be found nearly everywhere, with a concentration around Midtown.
Most bars and lounges open at 1000 and dont close until 0400, although some may call it a night at around 0200. Dedicated dance clubs open later, many around 2100-2200, but dont really get going until 2300 or so, when queues wrap around the block. Clubs charge anywhere from $5 to $30 for admission; Friday and Saturday are typically the most expensive nights but prices fluctuate depending on the DJ or live act.
Check local listings in The Village Voice or Time Out New York for up-to-the-minute information. For details of clubs offering live music, see Music. For details of gay and lesbian venues, see Gay and lesbian. Finally, dont forget your ID card or passport, as most bars and clubs strictly card everyone regardless of age.
