Located in a rather grimy area of Downtown, the Port Authority Bus Terminal (41st St at 8th Av, T 1-212 564 8484) is the major hub for short- and long-distance buses, including national Greyhound services (T1-800 231 2222) and regional bus companies such as Peter Pan Trailways (T1-800 343 9999). Those wanting to travel to/from Philadelphia, Washington DC or Boston, however, should consider the Chinatown bus services, which run from 139 Canal St at the Bowery every hour or so. The tickets are a bargain at $10 each way.
