Filmmakers just cant seem to get enough of New York and, with more than 250 movies shot here each year, its no surprise that youll recognize many sights from the big screen. When it comes to watching films, whether youre a fan of the big flashy Hollywood spectacles or prefer obscure foreign-language films with subtitles, New York has a moviehouse to suit, including a commendable number of independent and arthouse cinemas. Two significant film festivals take place in the city each year, the New York Film Festival in October and the Tribeca Film Festival in May. The latter was first organized by Robert De Niro and others to help boost Lower Manhattan after September 11th and has, so far, been a great success. Theres also free, open-air cinema at the HBO Bryant Park Summer Film Festival in June and many other important film debuts, premieres and events throughout the year.
