Subway J, M, Z to Bowery, 6 to Spring St. Without some inside information, youd never find this hidden stone basement bar. Its dark, sexy and hip, with a DJ spinning clubby tunes and lots of corners for you to chill out in. Knitting Factory, A variety of rooms and a couple bars, with great musical talent. Merc Bar, 151 Mercer St,T1-212 966 2727. Subway N, R to Prince St. This eternally hip bar-lounge draws a lively, pretty group to its couches and fancy cocktails. Zinc Bar, Latin, Brazilian, Cuban jazz and more are on offer at this small, velvety spot tucked away belowstairs. The back room is romantic and roomier. $5 cover. APT, 419 W 13th St,T1-212 414 4245. Subway A, C, E to 14th St, L to 8th Av. Although its not as exclusive now as during its heyday, this lounge-club still has attitude. The unmarked entry leads pretty twentysomethings in Jimmy Choos to comfortable couches upstairs and DJs downstairs. Avalon, 47 W 20th St,T1-212 807 7780. Subway F, V to 23rd St. A former Episcopalian church is now a warren of dimly-lit bars and lounges leading to the chapel dance floor where DJs play electronica. The original Avalon was labelled a drug supermarket and closed down after years of trouble, including a shooting, but the revamped club seems to have eschewed its dodgy past for a more innocent future with an anything-goes crowd. Bungalow 8, 515 W 27th St, between 10th Av and 11th Av,T1-212 629 3333. Subway C, E to 23rd St. Swanky lounge-bar-club serving fancy drinks to swishy crowds. Its worth the money for a more civilized clubby night out. Cielo, 18 Little W 12th St,T1-212 941 1540. Subway A, C, E to 14th St, L to 8th Av. Well-heeled dancers shake the night away in a former beef locker thats now a Euro-styled industrial club. The sunken dance floor and intimate feel are accompanied by pricey cocktails and champagne.
