New York comedy has had a huge revival in recent years, with fringe performers now making a good showing at big venues and unconventional shows attracting local crowds to the smaller clubs. Check out the experimental comedians, musicians and performance artists at Moonwork and the unique brand of entertaining improvization offered by the Upright Citizens’ Brigade. Cabaret is available in many forms from cosy, candlelit performances to elegant shows in expensive hotel bars. Note that most comedy shows charge a small admission and a two-drink minimum.

Café Carlyle, Carlyle Hotel, 35 E 76th St,T1-212 570 7189. Subway 6 to 77th St. This chic 90-person cabaret venue is a perfect place to hear Woody Allen’s Monday night jazz band or Bobby Short’s Saturday night show. Phone a week ahead for your reservation.

Caroline’s on Broadway, 1626 Broadway at 50th St,T1-212 757 4100. Subway N, R, W to 49th St. This big and ritzy venue in Times Square features some well-known talent who often get filmed for televized comedy shows.

Comedy Cellar, 117 MacDougal St between Bleecker St and W 3rd St,T1-212 254 3480. Sun-Thu 2100, 2300; Fri 2100, 2245, 1230. $10-15 plus two-drink minimum. Subway A, C, E, F, V to W 4th St. Many famous comics have made guest appearances in this intimate environment, including Jerry Seinfeld who filmed Comedian here.

Gotham Comedy Club, 34 W 22nd St, between 5th Av and 6th Av,T1-212 367 9000. $10-15 plus two-drink minimum. Subway, F, V, N, R, W to 23rd St. It’s usually easier to get a seat here than at many comedy clubs. Often has a talented line-up.

Moonwork, Greenwich Village Center, 219 Sullivan St,T1-212 254 3074, http://www.moonwork.com Sat eve every 2 wks except in summer. Subway A, C, E to W4 St. Set in a Greenwich Village school, this unscripted show features original cabaret acts in a relaxed environment. The $15 cover charge includes all the beer you can drink.

The Supper Club, 240 W 47th St,T1212 921 1940. Subway N, R, W, 1, 2, 3, 9, 7 to 42nd St-Times Sq. This ornate, romantic cabaret space is a wonderful place to dine and dance to the tunes of respectable 12-piece bands.

Upright Citizens’ Brigade, 307 W 26th St,T1-212 366 9176, http://www.ucbtheatre.com Subway C, E at 23rd St. One of the best places to see comedy in New York, with improv, sketches and solo acts every night at cheap prices ($5-7). ‘Asssscat 3000’ at 2130 on Sunday is free, but arrive early to get tickets.
