Since Isadora Duncan introduced modern dance to New York in the early 1900s, New York has attracted a high calibre of choreographers and dancers, including the hugely influential Martha Graham, widely considered the mother of modern dance. The city now has five major dance companies, including the American Ballet Theater and the New York City Ballet, several modern troupes and handfuls of solo stars. The New York City Ballet performs in winter and spring at this beautiful bejewelled venue at the Lincoln Center. It provides the setting for spectacular, romantic performances such as Romeo and Juliet or Swan Lake.
