Mermaid Parade On the first Saturday of June all sorts of eccentric New Yorkers flock out to Coney Island to show off their mermaid-inspired garb and celebrate summer at one of New York’s wackiest street parties.

Puerto Rican Day Parade This rowdy Latin party is one of the biggest and most notorious parades in town. It parties down Fifth Avenue on the first Sunday in June with floats, music and food.

Metropolitan Opera Parks Concerts (http://www.metopera.org/ parks.html) Free open-air operas in Central Park are one of the city’s most romantic attractions in June. Bring a bottle of wine and a blanket and chill out with the locals as you listen to Puccini’s Turandot or Donizetti’s Lucia di Lammermoor.

HBO Bryant Park Summer Film Festival Classic films are shown outdoors every Monday between June and August. Nudge your blanket into the green space of Bryant Park and arrive early to stake your spot and have a picnic.

Central Park Summer Stage (http://www.summerstage.org) Many top international performers play jazz, funk, rock, blues and more at Rumsey Playfield in Central Park (enter at Fifth Avenue and 69th Street) from June until August. The concerts are often free.

New York Shakespeare Festival (T1-212 539 8750, http://www.shakespeareincentralpark.org) The Delacorte Theater at 81st Street hosts big name productions of the Bard from late June to late August. Free tickets, maximum two per person, are distributed on a first-come-first-served basis from 1300 on the day of the event. Be prepared to queue.

Restaurant Week (http://www.nycvisit.com) Participating restaurants offer three-course prix-fixe menus to coincide with the year ($20.04 in 2004) plus great lunch and dinner specials at a fraction of the normal price.

Museum Mile Festival (http://www.museummile.org) Take in some culture on the cheap as the stretch of museums from 86th to 104th Streets open their doors for free on the second Tuesday of June.

JVC Jazz Festival (http://www.festivalproductions.net/jvcjazz/ newyork.htm) For two weeks towards the end of June various venues around town host all sorts of jazz performances.
