SOB’s, 204 Varick St,T1-212 243 4940. Subway 1, 9 to Houston St. After midnight Brazilian funk, R&B, Afro-pop and all sorts of hip-hop acts help the punters dance the night away in this bamboo hut-inspired club.

Birdland, 315 W 44th St,T1-212 581 3080. Subway A, C, E to 42nd St-Port Authority. This established jazz club hosts nightly shows at 2100 and 2300. The steep cover, from $20 plus a $10 drink minimum, is worth it for the select talent on show.

Blue Note, 131 W 3rd St,T1-212 475 8592. Subway A, C, E, F to W 4th St. The long-running Village jazz stalwart is touristy and expensive but the line-up rarely disappoints.

Red Blazer, 32 W 37th St,T1-212 947 6428. Subway B, D, F, N, R to 34th St-Herald Sq. Old-time swing bands make an evening at Red Blazer an offbeat but memorable experience.

Village Vanguard, 178 Seventh Ave,T1-212 255 4037. Subway 1, 2 to Christopher St-Sheridan Sq. All the greats play in this basement in the West Village. It’s regarded by many as the best jazz venue in the city.

Zinc Bar, 90 W Houston,T1-212 477 8337. Subway A, C, B, D to W 4th St. This cool and cosy candlelit jazz joint also hosts Brazilian, Latin, African and other world music.

Classical music and opera tend to focus around the Lincoln Center and Carnegie Hall but it’s worth looking out for classical and choral performances at the city’s churches, especially around Christmas.

Brooklyn Academy of Music, 30 Lafayette Av, Brooklyn,T1-718 636 4100. Subway M, N, Q, R, W, 1, 2, 4 to Atlantic Av. The oldest concert hall in the country has at been the cultural heart of Brooklyn life since 1861. BAM has its own orchestra and hosts well-respected opera performances. It also stages a variety of experimental dance, music and theatre groups.

Carnegie Hall, 154 W 57th St,T1-212 247 7800, http://www.carnegiehall.org. Subway A, C, B, D, 1, 9 to 59th St-Columbus Circle, N, R, Q, W to 57th St. One of the world’s premier concert venues, Carnegie Hall was built in 1891 and still promises superb acoustics and a beautiful setting. Tchaikovsky conducted on opening night and, since then, the world’s most talented performers have taken to the stage here.
