Venture up to northern corner of Manhattan Island to enjoy the leafy tranquillity of Fort Tryon Park and the timeless medieval spirit of The Cloisters. The park looks out over the Hudson River to the Palisades in New Jersey and is one of the most peaceful and romantic settings in the city, with stone-walled gardens and beautiful flowers.
Across the Harlem River, the Bronx is the only part of New York City that's attached to the US mainland. Home to the Yankees baseball team, not to mention numerous rap stars, this borough also has an impressive collection of large parks and beautiful architecture, including Gothic-style Fordham University and the elegant mansions of Riverdale, which overlook the Hudson River.

John Rockefeller donated land and money for a French 12th-century chapter house, the Spanish Fuentaduena Chapel and other Gothic and Romanesque chapels to be reassembled on this site in the 1930s. Now, shadowy, vaulted passageways and Gregorian chant set the mood for a collection of enchanting artefacts drawn from monastic cloisters in France and Spain. The paintings, tapestries and frescos are taken from the Metropolitan Museum of Art's medieval collection. Of particular interest are the Unicorn tapestries, manuscripts of Jean, Duke of Berry, the Annunciation Triptych by Robert Campin, stained glass and the flower and herb gardens.
A medieval festival takes place at the Cloisters in September every year, bringing to life the customs and spirit of the Middle Ages. Performers, jugglers, magicians and knights on horseback are part of a 20-year tradition that attracts a share of eccentric New Yorkers.
