There are big branches of Virgin Records and HMV in both Henry Street and Grafton Street. Both have huge stocks and regular sales, but they are not the cheapest places in town.
New York is material bliss so its not surprising that many visitors come to the city just to max out their credit cards. New Yorks shops tempt even the most budget-conscious traveller with their huge choice. Uptowns designer shops and Midtowns department stores flash their expensive goods from swanky window displays, while Downtown has smaller boutiques, discount stores, bric-a-brac and offbeat speciality shops. Fifth Avenue, from 23rd Street down to 14th Street, features many of the retail chains typically found in shopping malls throughout the USA but there are unexpected delights, too, from the scrumptious food hall at Grand Central Terminal to Chelseas fabulous, kitschy weekend flea market.
For fashionistas theres everything from punk to posh, couture to camp, thrift and second-hand to designer heaven. Vintage gear can be found in the East Village, the Lower East Side and Nolita, while high-end designers are flocking to open stores in the Meatpacking District.
Most shops are generally open seven days a week, from about 1000 until at least 1800 Monday to Saturday, with shorter hours on Sundays. However, boutiques in the East Village and Lower East Side may not open until noon on any day of the week, while other stores will keep on selling until the late evening. Before you go mad with your credit card, dont forget the whopping 8.25% sales tax that is tacked on to all purchases.
