The leafy streets and big parks of Staten Island make many locals want to keep their slice of the city independent from other boroughs problems and have even voted to secede the city in past years. While most short-term visitors dont make this primarily residential borough a high-priority on their must-see list, Staten Island takes pride in its status as a historical landmark, as one of the first places that Giovanni da Verrazano stopped in 1524. The Verrazano Bridge links the island with Brooklyn and, at 4,260 feet (1,311 metres) is one of the worlds longest suspension bridges but most visitors choose to hop on the Staten Island ferry for stunning views of the city.
