Five million people use the subway each day, proof that this is the most reliable and handiest way to manoeuvre around the city, despite its rather grungy appearance at some stations. The system encompasses a massive area without zones or fare restrictions; for $2 you can travel to any of the five boroughs as far as the end of the line. The system can seem complicated at first but its logical once you get the hang of it. Letters or numbers are used to distinguish the trains and colours are used to denote different lines, with stations named after their street location. Express trains only call at major stops, while local trains stop at each station.
