Subway B, D, E to 7th Av. This is the city’s official source for information and free maps, brochures and discount coupons to sights and theatres. It also has a MetroCard vending machine. The Times Square Visitors Center (1560 Broadway between 46th St and 47th St, T 1-212 869 1890, daily 0800-2000), is also helpful for free city and theatre information.

      Adventure on a Shoestring, T 1-212 265 2663. Sat and Sun; call for times and meeting place. $5 per person. Howard Goldberg has been running a variety of tours for over 40 years. Each one lasts 90 minutes and may cover Marilyn Monroe’s Manhattan, Haunted Greenwich Village, A Salute to Jackie Kennedy Onassis or a Little Odessa tour of Brighton Beach.

      Big Onion Walking Tours, T 1-212 439 1090, http://www.bigonion.com $12 per person. Well-run and lively tours that focus on a variety of themes, such as the Gangs of New York or the Gay and Lesbian Village. The guides are all well-versed and entertaining. Call or check online for further information and to confirm tour times.

      Central Park Bicycle Tours, meet outside 2 Columbus Circle, T 1-212 541 8759, http://www.centralbiketour.com 1000, 1300 and 1600. $35, $20 children. Choose between a Central Park Movie Scenes, a Celebrity Trivia Bike Tour or a three-hour Manhattan Island Bike Tour. The friendly guides allow you the chance to stop and rest every so often. Bike rental is also available: $20 for two hours or $35 for a whole day.

      Circle Line Harbor Cruise, Pier 83 at W 42nd St and 12th Av, T 1-212 563 3200, http://www.circle-line.com Check website for times. $13-26 depending on length of tour. This narrated tour, with stops at the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island , is popular with tourists and a good way to see the city from afar.

      Gray Line Bus Tour, Port Authority at 8th Av and 42nd St,T1-800 669 0051. Probably the best of the familiar hop-on/hop-off double-decker tour buses. They don’t provide much insight into the city as they whizz by but can offer a quick overview, if you’re really short of time.

      Liberty Helicopter Tours, 30th St at the Hudson River,T1-212 967 4550, http://www.libertyhelicopters.com $49 for 7 mins to $155 for 15 mins. An expensive but unforgettable view of Manhattan.

      Talking Street,T1-800 644 3545, http://www.talkingstreet.com Anyone with a mobile phone can take this free self-guided tour of the Lower East Side, which explores the Jewish history of the area. There are 13 stops on the one-hour tour, starting from the Visitors’ Center at 261 Broome Street, where you’ll find free maps.
