Dotted Line

Bar des Ferailleurs, 18 rue de Lappe, 75011, T 01 48 07 89 12. Mon-Fri 1700-0200, Sat-Sun 1500-0200. M Bastille. On a street of themed bar-restaurants reminiscent of the tourist strip in a holiday resort, this is about the only authentic Parisian bar. It is done up with bits of old junk. You might even see locals in here.

Bar Zinc, 9 rue de Charonne, 75011, T 01 48 05 05 95. Mon-Fri 0800-0200, Sat-Sun 1030-0200. M Bastille. An unassuming watering hole that manages to be lively yet not smoky. Decorating the wall behind the bar is a novel spirit wheel, which the barman will spin for your pleasure. The food menu is more plug-that-gap than savour-every-mouthful.

Le Baron Rouge, 1 rue Théophile-Roussel, 75012, T 01 43 43 14 32. Mon 1700-2200, Tue-Thu 1000-1400, 1700-2200, Fri-Sat 1000-2200, Sun 1000-1500. M Ledru Rollin. This is the real deal – a spit-and-sawdust wine bar with chalkboard wine menus and reasonable prices. The decor fits too, with large, wooden wine barrels propping up ruddy-faced locals. Accompany your bottle with a plate of cheese or cold meats.

The Bottle Shop, 5 rue Trousseau, 75011, T 01 43 14 28 04. Mon-Sun 1130-0200. M Ledru Rollin. A small, jolly bar with painted pâpier maché geese suspended from the ceiling. Most of the staff, including the chef, are Irish. During happy hour (1700-2000) cocktails and pints are a mere €4.

Le Bucheron, 9 rue du Roi de Sicile, 75004, T 01 48 87 71 31. Mon-Sat 0830-2330, Sun 0900-1900. M St Paul. This small, dark and smoky bar is yet another favourite with young locals in the Marais. If you decide to eat, fresh pasta is the house speciality, followed by homemade tiramisu.

Café de l’Industrie, 16 rue St Sabin, 75011, T 01 47 00 13 53. Mon-Sun 1000-0200. M Bastille. Spacious bar with easy, timeless atmosphere, where customers eat and drink at all hours at rough-wood tables and cushioned benches. Unfortunately staff are decidedly overworked.

Café du Passage, 12 rue de Charonne, 75011, T 01 49 29 97 64. Mon-Sun 1800-0200. M Ledru Rollin. Cosy tables in the front room, luxurious leather benches in the backroom, and in summer a small pavement terrace. This quiet, comfortable wine bar boasts a great wine list.

Café Iguana, 15 rue de la Roquette, 75011, T 01 40 21 39 99. Sun-Thu 0900-1600, Fri-Sat 0900-0500. M Bastille. This is one of Bastille’s friendlier hang-outs, with a lighter, ambience than some of the heavier bars in the area, more greenhouse than boudoir . Cocktails are the going Bastille rate of €8-9. Every evening there is a cocktail du soir. Weekend brunch is €14-18.

Carpe Diem Café, 21 rue des Halles, 75001, T 01 42 21 02 01. Mon-Thu 0100-0200, Fri-Sat 1000-0400. M Châtelet. A welcome oasis of sophisticated calm in an area better known for raucous bars. The dark walls, tiny blue spotlights, candles and comfy chairs create a relaxed, vaguely hip atmosphere. On Fridays there is often live music and on Saturdays a DJ playing house and funk, otherwise the musical ambiance is soothing jazz.
