Not for the faint-hearted, nor for vegetarians. - Alcazar, 62 rue Mezarine, 75006, T 01 53 10 19 99. Mon-Sun 1200-1500, 1900-0100. M Odéon. The brainchild of Sir Terence Conran a vast modern brasserie downstairs coupled with a smart bar upstairs. The steep evening prices and swanky decor make it a favourite with trendy media types. Half the menu features classic French dishes, while the remainder shows influences from around the world, including Asia, Portugal and England. Allard, 41 rue St André des Arts, 75006, T 01 43 26 48 23. Mon-Sat 1200-1400, 1900-2330. M St Michel. A former coaching inn and a long-time favourite Parisian bistro, Allard must still rank as one of the capitals best. The food is both excellent and excellent value. The turbot with beurre blanc is sublime, the Paris-Brest unrivalled. Other specialities, for two people, include duck with olives and chicken with lentils. Brasserie Lipp, 151 blvd St Germain, 75006, T 01 45 48 53 91. Mon-Sun 1200-0200. M St Germain. A Paris institution with no shortage of celebrity diners to its credit. The food is good rather than exceptional, but the decor is suitably impressive. Ask for a table in the beautifully ornate downstairs dining room. - Les Bookinistes, 52 quai des Grands Augustins, 75006, T 01 43 25 45 94. Mon-Fri 1200-1430, 1900-2300, Sat 1900-2300. M St Michel. One of Guy Savoys bistros serving popular modern French cooking, located on the Seine overlooking Notre Dame. Comfortable and soothing interior with healthy sized portions of quality food, from delectable sea bass to melt-in-the-mouth scallops. Its a refreshing change to see a top chef in Paris providing such a choice of fabulous dishes for vegetarians. As always, lunch is better value than dinner, but even in the evening a meal here wont break the bank. - Le Salon dHélène, 4 rue dAssas, 75006, T 01 42 22 00 11. Tue-Sat 1200-1430, 2000-2300. Feast on roast chicken, the house speciality, followed by a choice of filling desserts. There are two-course set menus including a glass of wine for 11.50/14 lunch/dinner, or go à la carte for about 30. Polidor, 41 rue Monsieur le Prince, 75006, T 01 43 26 95 34. Mon-Sat 1200-1430, 1900-0100, Sun 1200-14.30, 1900-2300. M Odéon. A popular stand-by with a different dish for each day of the week, for example tripe with potatoes on Mondays and Basque chicken on Tuesdays. The menu is very meat-based. The clientele keep coming for the reasonable prices and the busy atmosphere, but not for top-notch cuisine.
