Dotted Line

Café de Flore, 172 blvd St Germain, 75006, T 01 45 48 55 26. Mon-Sun 0730-0100. M St Germain. Renowned for decades as being an unofficial philosophical forum in the heart of St Germain, the Café de Flore still retains its air of intellectualism, although today’s thinkers need deeper pockets than their forebears.

Les Deux Magots, 6 place St-Germain-des-Prés, 75006, T 01 45 48 55 25. Mon-Sun 0730-0100. M St Germain. The other Left Bank café and just as steeped in history as rival Café de Flore. In its heyday, it was another favourite of Hemingway, Sartre and Picasso. The terrace overlooks lovely St-Germain-des-Prés church.

€€ Comptoir, 37 rue Berger, 75001, T 01 40 26 26 66. Sun-Thu 1200-0200, Fri-Sat 1200-0300. M Les Halles. Sumptuous sofas, cushions galore and subtle coloured lighting makes this a relaxing hang-out in the heart of hectic Les Halles. The leatherbound menu offers a selection of average Moroccan dishes, and a choice of delicious hot drinks, such as sweet mint tea with pine nuts or hot chocolate with mint.

€€ Le Baz’Art Café, 36 blvd Henri IV, 75004, T 01 42 78 62 23. Mon-Sun 0800-2400. M Sully-Morland, Bastille. This café-restaurant has plush red velvet benches, curly wrought- iron chandeliers and flickering candles on every surface. Easy lounge music and chirpy service complete the smooth atmosphere.

€€ Le Loir dans la Théière, 3 rue des Rosiers, 75004, T 01 42 72 90 61. Mon-Fri 1130-1900, Sat-Sun 1000-1900. M St Paul. A fun and delicious tea room – The Dormouse in the Teapot – serving a dizzying choice of freshly baked cakes, pies and tarts for afternoon tea. Brunch or lunch it here in the early part of the day, or after 1600 indulge in tea and cake of your choice for €9. The atmosphere and clientele are quintessentially Marais.

€€ Le Comptoir du Commerce, 1 rue des Petits Carreaux, 75002, T 01 42 36 39 57. Mon-Sat 0800-2400, Sun 1200-1900. M Sentier. Ideally placed for a break from shopping on rue Montorgueil, although tables are tiny and tightly packed so big shopping bags are not recommended. Stripped pine walls and shutters, comfy cushioned seating and decorative jars of herbs, pulses and dried fruits create a country kitchen ambience.

€€ Les Philosophes, 28 rue Vielle du Temple, 75003, T 01 48 87 49 64. Mon-Sun 0900-0200. M Hôtel de Ville. An atmospheric café-restaurant with a large terrace. In the ultra- modern toilets, meaning of life questions are written on the mirrors.

Pause Café, 41 rue de Charonne, 75011, T 01 48 06 80 33. Mon-Sat 0800-0100, Sun 0800-2000. M Bastille, Ledru-Rollin. The relaxed atmosphere, large terrace and good, reasonably priced food have made this a very popular lunch spot with Bastille regulars for years. It might be bustling, but don’t expect attentive waiters or speedy service.

Le Pain Quotidien, 18-20 rue des Archives, 75004, T 01 44 54 03 07. Mon-Sun 0730-2300. M Hôtel de Ville. Paris has five deservedly popular cafés belonging to this Belgian chain. All manner of fresh breads, pastries and cakes, plus salads and sandwiches. Their special is the weekend brunch. Buy their jams, chocolate and praline spreads and olive oils to take home.
