Dotted Line

Le Pain Quotidien, 18-20 rue des Archives, 75004, T 01 44 54 03 07. Mon-Sun 0730-2300. M Hôtel de Ville. Paris has five deservedly popular cafés belonging to this Belgian chain. All manner of fresh breads, pastries and cakes, plus salads and sandwiches. Their special is the weekend brunch. Buy their jams, chocolate and praline spreads and olive oils to take home.

La Ruche à Miel, 19 rue d’Aligre, 75012, T 01 43 41 27 10. Tue-Sun 0900-1930. M Ledru-Rollin. A small, cosy Algerian-owned salon de thé serving traditional harira soup, tagines and couscous. Choose from sticky, sweet pastries or soft ice-cream in cones to follow.

L’Imprévu Café, 9 rue Quincampoix, 75004, T 01 42 78 23 50. Mon-Sun 1200-0200. M Les Halles. A four-roomed café hidden down a narrow backstreet. The cosiest room is at the back on the left, a non-smoking section. The rest can get very smoky. The sort of place where people are as likely to come alone with notepad and pensive thoughts, as they are for a gossip with friends.

Le Café Noir, 65 rue Montmartre, 75002, T 01 40 39 07 36. Mon-Sun 1200-0200. M Sentier. A down-to-earth corner café with large windows, red formica tables, mirrors and pictures galore, and a clunky-looking bike high up on the wall. The fun style and reasonable prices account for its recent discovery by the fashionable evening crowd.

Angélina’s, 226 rue de Rivoli, 75001, T 01 42 60 82 00. Mon-Sat 0900-1845. M Tuileries. Crammed full of tourists it may be, but that has had no adverse effect on the quality of the tea and cakes. Unfortunately, however, the prices are prohibitive. The house speciality, Le Mont Blanc – meringue, whipped cream and chestnut cream topping – costs over €6, as does the thick hot chocolate, Le Chocolat Africain. Still, with calories like these, it’s possible to skip lunch.

Ladurée, 16 rue Royale, 75008, T 01 42 60 21 79. Mon-Sat 0800-2000, M Madeleine. Choose from a wonderful choice of pastries or dainty finger sandwiches to eat in the splendid tea room – the macaroons are especially good. If you can’t stomach the steep prices, simply admire the wonderful window displays, or buy a cake to go from the bakery counter.

La Ferme, 55 rue Saint Roch, 75001, T 01 40 20 12 12. Mon-Sat 0800-2000, M Opéra. A self-service café with delicious soups, sandwiches, cakes and pastries. Most of the ingredients are organic. Hot chocolate has never been so wickedly rich and satisfying, and on no account resist the pasties de nata (Portuguese custard tarts).

Chez Prune, 36 rue Beaurepaire, 75010, T 01 42 41 30 47. Mon-Sat 0800-0200, Sun 1000-0200. M Jacques Bonsergent. A lovely location on the canal St Martin makes Chez Prune a popular weekend hang-out. Decent salads and simple meals, but the service could be better.
