From Christmas, Chopin and cinema to raï music, Chinese New Year and Gay Pride, somewhere in Paris something is almost always being celebrated. Cultural festivals in the city are especially good and often give an opportunity to experience an enormous range of Parisian, French and international music or cinema, sometimes for free. Throughout the year there are also small-scale carnivals and parades in the different quartiers of Paris. Keep an eye out in the press, specifically the listings magazines Pariscope (there is an English section at the back), LOfficiel des Spectacles and Zurban. They detail all the one-off and less well-publicized events that might otherwise pass you by, such as the festivals celebrating chocolate or tea, the jewellery fairs, the organic food fairs and the Christmas fairs. Open-studio weekends are worth looking out for too, if you are interested in keeping tabs on new sculptors, painters and photographers. These are currently scheduled to take place in Belleville and in Ménilmontant, but there may well be more in other parts of town too.
