E Grand Hôtel Lévêque, 29 rue Cler, 75007, T 01 47 05 49 15, F 01 45 50 49 36, http://www.hotel-leveque.com M École Militaire, La Tour Maubourg. A 50-room hotel in the lovely market street, Rue Cler, offering clean and reasonably priced singles, doubles and triples. All rooms, except for singles, have en-suite toilet and shower. The hotel has been recently renovated, so reservations are more essential than ever.

E Le Pavillon, 54 rue Saint-Dominique, 75007, T 01 45 51 42 87, F 01 45 51 32 79, PatrickPavillon@aol.com M La Tour-Maubourg. Budget 18-room hotel in a pretty red-brick building some 400 years old, complete with flowery courtyard set back from the street. Once owned and occupied by Josephine de Beaumarchais, before she married Emperor Napoleon. Singles, doubles and family rooms with four beds. Reservations essential.

C Hôtel Danemark, 21 rue Vavin, 75006, T 01 43 26 93 78, F 01 46 34 66 06, paris@hoteldanemark.com M Vavin. On seeing the elegant facade you have the feeling that here is a hotel with a difference. The feeling is reinforced on arrival by the friendly welcome. The lobby is an appealing combination of old and new – the stone walls contrast with the modern furniture and touches of warm red. Rooms are cosy and at least one of the bathrooms has a jacuzzi. The street is small yet lively, lined with little cafés and designer- paper shops.

D Hôtel Istria, 29 rue Campagne-Première, 75014, T 01 43 20 91 82, F 01 43 22 48 45. M Raspail. Hiding on a quiet sidestreet is the Istria, a 26-room hotel with enough charm to have attracted a few famous guests in its time, including Josephine Baker, Eric Satie and Man Ray. The warm red tartan of the seating in the reception area may be the first thing you notice. It’s a quiet street, but as a precautionary measure all rooms are soundproofed. In summer, the best rooms are the five overlooking the small garden area.

D-E Hôtel Delambre, 35 rue Delambre, 75014, T 01 43 20 66 31, F 01 45 38 91 76, http://www.hoteldelambre.com M Edgar Quinet. A reasonably priced, clean and comfortable hotel in Montparnasse. The reception area has inviting pink-and-white candy striped chairs. Writer André Breton lived here in the 1920s.

A Pavillon de la Reine, 28 place des Vosges, 75003, T 01 40 29 19 19, F 01 40 29 19 20, http://www.pavillon-de-la-reine.com M Bastille, St Paul. Surroundings fit for a queen, wood panelling, tapestries, roaring log fire and so on. This sumptuous hotel also enjoys the thrill of being located behind the arcades of the place des Vosges around a delightful flowered courtyard.

B Hôtel Bourg Tibourg, 19 rue du Bourg Tibourg, 75004, T 01 42 78 47 39, F 01 40 29 07 00, hotel.duy.bourg.tibourg@ wanadoo.fr M St Paul, Hôtel de Ville. This wonderful Marais hotel is another Costes/Jacques Garcia masterpiece. The French designer has lived in the Marais for over 20 years. The rooms are exquisitely intimate and de luxe, seamlessly combining French and Oriental influences. There are handmade tapestry stools, mosaic tiled bath surrounds and heavy mahogany doors. Chic stripes and rich, red velvet abounds. There is a delightful attention to detail, such as the little recessed seats on the stairs where the weary can catch their breath (there is also a lift).

B Hôtel Saint-Merry, 78 rue de la Verrerie, 75004, T 01 42 78 14 15, F 01 40 29 06 82, http://www.hotelmarais.com M Hôtel de Ville, Châtelet. This hotel is in a pedestrianized area on the border with Les Halles and the Marais. It was once a presbytery for the neighbouring Roman Catholic St Merry church, hence the Gothic, quasi-ecclesiastical decor of stone, iron and wood. There is no lift, and in keeping with the hotel’s rather forbidding style, only the suites have television.

C Hôtel Axial Beaubourg, 11 rue du Temple, 75004, T 01 42 72 72 22, F 01 42 72 03 53, http://www.axialbeaubourg.com M Hôtel de Ville. The kind of hotel guests return to and recommend to their closest friends, which is why it is best to reserve well in advance. The staff are friendly and welcoming and the new look is elegantly contemporary. There’s not a great deal of floorspace around the beds, but the rooms are stylish and unfussy, decorated in wood, tiles and a single rich colour. The views over the street are more interesting than those at the back, and double-glazing means noise isn’t a problem. A breakfast buffet for an extra €10 is served in the former stone-wall cellar, highlighting the welcoming combination of old and new.
