E L’Hôtel Chopin, 46 passage Jouffroy, au niveau du 10 blvd Montmartre, 75009, T 01 47 70 58 10, F 01 42 47 00 70. M Grands Boulevards. A charming hotel with 36 en-suite rooms tucked away in a delightful 19th-century, glass-roofed passage. The novel location ensures it is usually full, so booking ahead is advisable.

E-F Hôtel de Lille, 8 rue du Pélican, 75001, T 01 42 33 33 42. M Louvre-Rivoli. Not all of the 13 rooms have bathrooms, but you get what you pay for. Probably the cheapest hotel in the area, it is clean and has recently been spruced up.

AL Four Seasons George V, 31 ave George V, 75008, T 01 49 52 70 00, F 01 49 52 70 20, http://www.fourseasons.com M George V. The George V is a celebrity hotel. Even the flowers in the reception area are chic and fashionable. Rates start at €670 for a room, and €9,000 for the Royal Suite. During recent renovations a small swimming pool (6 m by 8 m) was added. The pool and fitness complex are for the use of hotel guests only, but anyone can book a treatment at the spa (T 01 49 52 72 10). Anyone with a thick wallet anyway – prices start at €150 for an hour’s massage or €500 for five hours of beauty and relaxation treatments.

A Hôtel Costes K, 81 ave Kléber, 75116, T/F 01 44 05 74 74. M Trocadéro. This is the second, and more modern, Costes brothers hotel in Paris (the original Hotel Costes is near the Tuileries gardens). The minimalist lounge-bar and dining room surround a small, leafy courtyard. The unfussy decor of the rooms – crisp cotton sheets, leather chairs, marble bathrooms, funky TV/CD system – definitely works, although typically some of the chairs look as if they were intended to be admired rather than sat on. Unfortunately, staff can be snooty to those who don’t meet their standards of elegance.

A Hôtel Raphael, 17 ave Kléber, 75116, T 01 53 64 32 00, F 01 53 64 32 01, http://www.raphael-hotel.com M Kléber. On the same street as Hôtel Costes K, but there is nothing snooty here, just good old-fashioned service with a smile. Plenty of tapestries, Persian rugs, oak panelling, heavy drapes, oil paintings and period furniture. The overall effect is of classic, at times sombre, grandeur. The list of famous guests is endless and it has been used in films more than once (remember the lift scene in Jean-Marc Barr’s The Big Blue?). Rates start at €435 for a chambre de charme. The rooftop restaurant has fantastic views.

A Pershing Hall, 49 rue Pierre Charron, 75008, T 01 58 36 58 00, F 01 58 36 58 01, http://www.pershinghall.com, M George V. The best feature of this ultra-modern hotel is the vertical garden, a luscious wall of more than 360 varieties of exotic plants. French designer Andrée Putman has designed 26 stylish rooms in neutral colours, with grey wooden floors, high beds and discreet lighting. This is minimalism in the extreme, with no superfluous or unnecessary flourishes. Bathrooms are the high point: large, calming and with wicker baskets of goodies. Rates rise to €1,000 for a suite. Every room has a complimentary minibar. The exclusive restaurant and bar is mostly frequented by non-residents.
