€€ La Boulangerie, 15 rue des Panoyaux, 75020, T 01 43 58 45 45, http://www.restaulaboulangerie.com Sun-Mon1930-2400, Tue-Sat 1230-1430, 1930-2400. M Ménilmontant. An unpretentious restaurant founded in a former bakery, hence the name. A relatively new, but traditional-style, bistro, it serves excellent value French favourites. Two/three courses will set you back €10.50/€14 for lunch and €15/€18 for dinner.

€€ Le Casque d’Or, 51 rue des Cascades, 75020, T 01 43 58 44 55. M Jourdain. Regional cooking from Auvergne served up on checked tablecloths. The charcuterie comes directly from Auvergne and the ice-creams and sorbets are homemade. Try the suckling pig with honey, or the aligot, a cheese and potato dish with ham or sausages. Sometimes a singer will strum a few tunes on a guitar, then pass around a hat.

€-€€ L’Olive Salée, 130 rue Saint-Maur, 75011, T 01 43 38 66 62. Mon-Sat 1200-1430, 1915-2400. M Parmentier. The friendly patron, the star-studded ceiling and the enticing wafts of honey, cumin and cinnamon from the open kitchen make this a Berber restaurant with a bit extra.

Chez Ramona, 17 rue Ramponeau, 75020, T 01 46 36 83 55. Tue-Sun 1930-2330. M Belleville. An epicerie-cum-restaurant in a backstreet in Belleville serving good homemade paella. It’s a bit like being in Grandma’s kitchen, complete with the potted plants on the windowsill. It’s so small that reservations are essential.

Krung Thep, 93 rue Julien Lacroix, 75020, T 01 43 66 83 74. Mon-Sun 1900-2300. M Pyrénées. A very popular and cheap Thai restaurant. Bookings essential. The food can be a bit on the greasy side, but is very good value for money. However, getting in and out of the tight seats may prove tricky.

Le Président, 120-124 rue du Faubourg du Temple, 75011, T 01 47 00 17 18.Mon–Sun 1200-1500, 1900-0200. M Belleville. The Chinese restaurant to see and be seen in. This is the place where the Chinese well-to-do hold their wedding parties and so on. Downstairs is the Da Lat restaurant (T 01 43 38 22 72, Mon-Sun 1100-2400), which serves Vietnamese specialities as well as Chinese dishes. Midday menus start from as little as €7.

Zap’s, 81 blvd Ménilmontant, 75011, T 01 48 05 09 88. Mon-Fri 1800-2300, Sat-Sun 1300-2300. M Ménilmontant. A fun family Moroccan restaurant where customers relax on pouffes at low tables and eat couscous and tagine. On Fridays and Saturdays there are belly dancers.
