Even more so than cycling, blading is the sport of the moment amongst Parisians of any height and age. What they share is a basic-to-brilliant proficiency on their wheels and a spirit of adventure. For group skating there are two options. Sundays 1430 there is a beginners’ skate. The departure point is the shop Nomades Roller Shop (37 blvd Bourdon, 75004, T 01 44 54 07 44, http://www.rollernet.com/nomads M Bastille). Hiring skates costs €9 or €15 with protection pads (hire them on the Saturday evening for the same price to avoid the Sunday crush). The more experienced can don their skates for the three-hour Friday night extravaganza organized by Pari Roller (http://www.pari-roller.com). The departure point is place Raoul Dautry, 75014, at 2145. The finish is at place d’Italie, 75013. It is possible to hire skates at the start. This is no place for the wobbly or timid – courses are fast, furious and 40,000 strong.
