Its fortunate the Paris metro is so efficient and reliable, because the same is not true for the Parisian taxi. Late at night, and often at other times too, taxis can seem a rarity, although tourist office statistics would have you believe there are nearly 15,000 on the streets. The TAXI light is fully illuminated when the taxi is available. Taxis operate on a meter system based on area and time of day. City centre journeys 0700-1900 Mondays-Saturdays are charged at 0.60/km, and journeys 1900-0700 and all day Sunday are 1/km. The meter starts rolling at 2 and there is a minimum fee of 5. There are ranks on major roads and SNCF train stations (these stations carry an extra 0.70 charge). Some companies accept bookings, although they are not famed for reliability and you must pay the drivers journey to the pick-up point.
