Dotted Line

Hús Málarans, Bankastræti 7a. With the Red Room club upstairs and a spacious, arty café downstairs, this is more of a well-groomed place than some of the others, filled with perfectly sleek blondes and a designer-clad mid- to late- twenties crowd.

Hverfisbarinn, Hverfisgata 20, T 511 6500. Sun-Thu 1130-0100, Fri-Sat 1130-0400. Trendy café-bar-bistro with white leather sofas, minimalist décor, style magazines and a relaxing atmosphere. Things get a little more upbeat at the weekends with DJ sets and dancing.

Kaffeebarinn, Bergstaðstræti 1, T 551 1588. One of Reykjavík’s hippest hangouts for artists and musicians. Blur’s Damon Albarn has a stake in this small corrugated-iron-clad two-storey bar and it’s the place to spot the celebs when they’re in town. It’s laid-back and inviting, though, without a hint of snobbery. The old sofas and tables upstairs add a touch of bohemian glamour. Blend in with trainers, retro t-shirts and cords, and look out for Björk – this is her favourite bar.

Kaffee Brennslann, Posthússtræti 9, T 561 3600. Mon-Thu 1100-0100, Fri 1100-0300, Sat 1200-0300, Sun 1400-0100. Laid-back, warm café-bar attracting a range of people. Sandwiches cost around ISK 800-1000. In the evenings try any one of a huge array of beers and relax amid the twinkling fairy lights. A great place to start your evening.

Kaupfélagið, Laugavegur 30, T 552 9393. This is a quirky place. Kaupfélagið used to be a bank and is hip and funky with a designer-finish interior, frosted glass, cowskin stools and funky light fittings. The old bank-vault doors are still there downstairs in the toilets. DJ sets at weekends, funky loos and massage one night a week

Prikið, Bankastræti 12, T 551 3366. The oldest place to party, Prikið means ‘the stick’ and is a fetchingly small and cosy place, ideal for starting your evening. Expect everyone from the young and hip to old men reading newspapers in the corner. Standing room only at weekends.

Skuggabarinn, Hotel Borg, Pósthússtræti 11, T 551 1247. Classy bar at Hotel Borg recently reopened, serving cocktails and descending into madness and dancing into the early hours. Popular with the young and fashionable.

Thorvaldsen Bar, Austurstræti 10. A sleek, upwardly mobile place which spills into Austurvöllur Square on a sunny day with laid-back beats and a range of Thai, American and European snacks. It’s light and hip with a minimalist interior and, bizarrely, a model of a small breast on the bookshelf, nothing to do with the strip club next door.
