Dotted Line

Mál og Menning, Laugavegur 18, T 552 3740, Bankastræti 2, and Kringlan Mall, http://www.malogmenning.is Exceptional Icelandic chain with a full range of books in English and other languages on Iceland and textbooks for learning Icelandic. The Laugavegur branch has a café upstairs and is open until 2200. At the Bankastræti branch next to the tourist office there’s a full range of travel guides and souvenirs. These shops also have displays of Icelandic CDs so you can pick up the best of whatever you like while you’re in town. CDs are expensive here and not much cheaper than buying on import in your own country.

Bókavarðan, Vesturgata 17 near the old harbour. Unusual second-hand bookshop containing more than 40,000 English and Icelandic books, 1950s pictures, magazines and much much more. The literal translation is ‘book cairn’ and it’s a treasure trove for bibliophiles interested in the bond between literature and the Icelanders.
