KK-K Café Paris, Austurstræti 14, T 551 1020. Sun-Thu 0800- 2400, Fri-Sat 1000-0100. With the best view of Austurvöllur Square and often spilling out into the street, Café Paris is a refined café doubling as a bar with a relaxed Sunday morning atmosphere. It attracts a lot of tourists for coffee and ice creams.

K Café Garðurinn, Klappurstígur 37, T 561 2345. Mon-Tue, Thu-Fri 1100-2000, Wed 1100-1800, Sat 1200-1700, Sun closed. Small vegetarian café/restaurant with a daily selection of home-cooked vegetarian specialities, soup, sandwiches, coffee, tea and cakes.

K Gott í Goginn, Laugavegur 2a, T 552 4444. Mon-Thu 1030-2000, Fri-Sat 1030-1900, closed Sun. Meaning ‘good in the beak’, this small deli/take away snack bar on Laugavegur sells pizza, pasta, Mexican food and sandwiches at reasonable prices. Cheap food on the go.

K Grái Kötturinn, Hverfisgata 16a, T 551 1544. Mon-Fri 0700- 1700, Sat 0900-1700. A bohemian 1950s-style diner with bookshop chic. The Grey Cat, named after a cat that once lived in the building, is run by artists. There’s a mixture of books to look through while you’re tucking into large plates of hangover-style fry-ups and pancakes, costing around ISK 1000.

K Kaffeevagninn, Grandargarði 10, T 551 5932. Daily 0730-1800. A 10-15 minute walk from the centre of town, the Coffee Wagon overlooks the old harbour and you can watch the small fishing boats come and go. It’s a bit of a walk, but worth it. It’s a lovely small diner-style café to relax in away from the trendy crowds and more of a local’s haunt than many of the others. If you’re an early bird, this one’s for you.

K Kaffeetar, Laugavegur 8, T 511 4540. Mon-Sat 0730-1800, Sun 1000-1800. The closest thing to a Starbucks in the city with a wide range of different coffees and other branches at the nearby malls. The saving grace is many and varied continental breakfast foods, bagels and cakes, all at reasonable prices.

K Kaffee Reykjavík, Vesturgata 2, T 551 8900. Mon-Thu 1130-0100, Fri-Sun 1200-0400. Vast pub popular with the over thirties. One of the few places where the less-fashionable hang out at. Serves burgers and chips and has some alcohol promotions. Live music most evenings, generally golden-oldie cover bands with mullets (haircuts, not fish).

K Kofi Tómasar Frænda, Laugavegur 2, T 551 1855. Mon-Thu 1000-0100, Fri-Sat till late. Cosy basement café on the main shopping street serving snacks, coffee and cake during the day and into the evening. There’s also a good supply of Hello! magazines and it’s a welcoming place on a slow Sunday afternoon.

K Mokka Kaffi, Skólavörðustígur 7. Mon-Sat 0930-2330, Sun 1400-2330. The oldest café in town, dating from 1958, Mokka is an intimate art gallery/café serving the best waffles in town. A quiet refuge popular with the locals.
