Football is Iceland’s main sport, along with handball. The women’s football team have been particularly successful in Europe and the men’s narrowly missed out on qualifying for the recent World Cup. It has been cruelly said that the national team has the same amount of success you’d expect of a team from a small town playing teams from countries ten times the size, and it is something of a marvel that Iceland has produced a couple of footballers who play in Europe.
