Iceland can be reached by air and sea. Keflavík International Airport is 48 km from Reykjavík city centre and the most popular point of entry. By sea, the port of Seyðisfjörður is 682 km from the city on the eastern coast of Iceland. Negotiating the city is very easy. There are four options: your feet, the reliable yellow Stræto buses which run every 20 minutes during the day, hiring a bike, or fighting your way along the busy streets in a car. There is neither a rail nor a metro system because Reykjavík really doesn't need it. There are a huge number of trips you can take from Reykjavík into the weird and wonderful countryside. Þingvellir, the Blue Lagoon, Gullfoss and Geysir are unmissable and can be done either as part of an organized group or by hire car. Reykjavík is very safe at all times of day and night. If you arrive after midnight youll certainly find somewhere to drink, but eating is a problem as most places close at 2200. Most hotels are open 24 hours but in general guesthouses will be shut by midnight unless youve arranged with them to stay open later prior to arrival.
