Dotted Line

A trek on an Icelandic horse is a highly recommended way to see the Icelandic countryside and a relaxing wallow in a hot tub when you come back is the best way to soothe your aching muscles. There are a number of stables offering day and half-day tours just outside Reykjavík. The closest is Ís Hestar, and for the others you can be picked up in town. If you’re an experienced rider you can also join longer tours across the interior of the county rounding up the sheep and seeing the natural wonders, again with Ís Hestar.

Eldhestar, Vellir, 810 Hveragerdi, T 483 4884, F 486 5577. Stables in Hveragerdi, about 40 minutes from the city, offering day tours in the lava, around Hekla and other hot springs including the Blue

Lagoon. A 1-2 hour tour costs from ISK 2200 and day tours are from ISK 8200, pick-up at city hotels and guesthouses included.

Longer tours also available and a connection with Iceland Excursions means you can ride in the morning and visit the Golden Circle or Blue Lagoon in the afternoon. Prices start at ISK 3900 for a lava tour. The lava tour plus Blue Lagoon trip costs ISK 6800, lunch and pick-up at hotels and guesthouses included.
