Dotted Line

KKK Apótek, Austurstræti 16, T 575 7900. Café-bar open from 1100, restaurant for dinner from 1800. Fashionable new restaurant serving fusion cuisine. Apótek used to be a pharmacy, hence the name, but now dispenses tongue-twisting goodies like Tahitian tuna tartar with wonton soup and a range of sushi instead of pills and potions. It’s certainly the place to see and be seen, and is good for coffee and their extra special brownie with orange sorbet during the day. The separate bar-café menu is good value and equally delicious.

KKK Argentina, Barónsstígur 11a, T 551 9555, http://www.argentina.is Daily from 1800. If you’re looking for meat in this city, this is the place to visit. Argentina is a darkly seductive basement restaurant serving exceptional mouth-watering steaks of all description, specializing in beef. It’s the winner of numerous accolades and is recommended.

KKK Brasserie Borg, Pósthússtræti 11, T 551 1247 Open for snacks all day, dinner 1800-2100. As you’d expect, it’s a dining experience at this art-deco hotel with a small menu featuring rainbow trout, lamb, lobster and reindeer, served in an environment that’ll make you feel like a 1950s film star. If you can’t afford the food, just go for a cocktail in the bar, Skuggabarinn.

KKK Café Opera, Lækjargata 2, T 552 4045, F 551 7477, http://www.cafeopera.is Daily 1800-0100, Fri-Sat 1800-0300, kitchen open to 2330, 0100 Fri-Sat. Opera, as it’s known to locals, is a traditional restaurant with a cosy antique atmosphere and excellent food including a ‘hot rock special’ where you can grill your own fish or steak at your table. They’ve also got an extensive wine list and serve Icelandic specials like guillemot and dolphin. One of the few places open past 2200, with a cosy wine bar upstairs.

KKK Caruso, Þingholtstræti 1, T 562 7335. Daily 1130-2300. Traditional Italian restaurant on the corner of Laugavegur with lunch specials, pizza and much more expensive meat dishes in an intimate, warm restaurant.

KKK Humarhúsið Restaurant, Amtmannsstígur 1, T 561 3303. Daily 1100-2330. One of Reykjavík’s finest seafood restaurants, specializing particularly in lobster and offering tempting dishes like pan-fried catfish with papaya salsa. The traditional wooden building adds to the intimate and warm atmosphere.

KKK Lækjarbrekka, Bankastræti 2, T 551 4430, F 552 8684. Daily 1100-2400. Right next door to the tourist information centre, this is the place for an authentic tourist experience, including the fish buffet and puffin party. It’s one of the oldest houses in Reykjavík, built in 1834, with a well-preserved and distinguished interior, but you'll find few Icelanders eating here.

KKK La Primavera, Austurstræti 9, T 561 8555. Mon-Fri 1200- 1430, Sun-Thu 1100-2300, Fri-Sat 1800-2330. Upmarket Italian affair, with a stylish and modern interior and expen- sive and delicious pasta. Attracts a young, fashionable clientele.

KKK Naust, Vesturgata 8, T 552 3030, F 561 7758, http://www.naustid.is Daily from 1800. The oldest restaurant in the city with antique-style decor, intimate booths and cheerful staff. In a classy atmosphere you'll be served mainly Icelandic dishes like grilled whale steak with wildberry sauce, guillemot, smoked lamb and the house speciality of seafood gratin.
