KKK Naust, Vesturgata 8, T 552 3030, F 561 7758, http://www.naustid.is Daily from 1800. The oldest restaurant in the city with antique-style decor, intimate booths and cheerful staff. In a classy atmosphere you'll be served mainly Icelandic dishes like grilled whale steak with wildberry sauce, guillemot, smoked lamb and the house speciality of seafood gratin.

KKK Siggi Hall, Thórsgata 1, T 511 6677, siggihall@odinsveum.is Daily from 1800. Next to the Odinsve Hotel is Reykjavík’s finest restaurant. Siggi Hall is known to Icelanders all over for his regular weekly TV show and to even more, now that he’s opened up a city centre restaurant, for his shellfish soufflé and bacalao (salt cod). It’s a stylish and relaxed place to dine, particularly good for its Icelandic fish, game and lamb.

KKK Skólabrú, Pósthússtræti 17. Daily from 1800. Old timber house from the turn of the century housing an exclusive, classy restaurant. Skólabrú is very tasteful and serves gourmet food, ranging from flambéed lobster tails to champagne sorbets, and specializing in fish and international cuisine. Attracts an older clientele.

KKK Sticks 'n' Sushi, Aðalstræti 12, T 511 4440. Daily from 1130. Part of a Scandinavian chain, an elegant Japanese restaurant in a high-ceilinged wooden house in the oldest part of town. Fresh, fashionable fish for lunch, dinner or as a takeaway.

KKK Við Tjörnina, Templarasund 3, T 551 8666. Daily 1200-2300. With a prime location down towards the pond, this is another specialist seafood restaurant but this time with a French twist. They have a particularly large selection of wines and a daily specials menu starting from ISK 3100 in an intimate historic restaurant.

KKK Þrir Frakkar, Baldursgata 14, T 552 3939. Mon-Thu 1100- 2300, Sat-Sun 1800-2330. Icelandic seafood restaurant specializing in whale meat. The name is an Icelandic play on words, meaning both ‘three Frenchmen’ and ‘three trenchcoats’. Small, intimate and very Icelandic. Recommended if you like fish.

KK Amigos Restaurant, Lækjargata 6a, T 511 1333. Daily from 1130 to late. Fun Mexican bar-restaurant with a party atmosphere. Enchiladas and fajitas cost from around ISK 1500.

KK Asía, Laugavegur 10, T 562 6210. Daily 1200-2200. Oriental restaurant serving a wide array of Chinese-style fish, prawn, beef and chicken dishes in a large restaurant on the main shopping street. Lunch is a bargain ISK 950 for three courses and you can expect to pay about ISK 1400 for dinner.

KK Café Victor, Hafnarstræti 1-3, T 561 9555. Daily from 1100. Casual bistro-bar serving Mediterranean food, sandwiches for under ISK 1000 and a small tourist menu. Soup of the day with a fish main course costs around ISK 1790. It’s also a nice place to stop for coffee.
