K Krúa Thai, Tryggvagata 14, T 561 0039. Mon-Fri 1130-2130, Sat- Sun 1200-2130. Small Thai restaurant serving deep-fried fish, shrimps, chicken and all that you’d expect at unbelievable prices for this city. There’s an even cheaper lunchtime special Monday to Friday costing ISK 590 for three courses.

KKK Perlan Öskjuhlíð, 105 Reykjavík, T 562 0200, F 562 0207, http://www.perlan.is Daily from 1900. Highly rated Icelandic restaurant serving meat and seafood to distinguished diners with a slowly revolving floor and beautiful views of the city. Serves lobster, veal, beef, lamb and even grilled reindeer. Almost prohibitively expensive even by Icelandic standards, the most luxurious dining experience to be had. An average meal costs ISK 5000-5500 per person.

KKK Fjörukráin, Strandgata 50a, 220 Hafnarfjörður, T 565 1213, F 565 1891. Sun-Thu 1200-0100, Fri-Sat 1200-0300. Eat as much as you can in the Viking hall of Fjörukráin. The food, including lamb, schnapps and skyr, is exceptional and a banquet of traditional fare costs ISK 4600 including drinks and some great Viking and Valkyrie impersonations.

KK Café Maria, Skólavegur 1, T 481 3160. Daily 1100-2330. Classy restaurant serving puffin, Italian food and a wide range of drinks. Undoubtedly the most stylish place to eat on Heimaey.

KK Lanterna, Bárustígur 11, T 481 3393. Daily 1100-2230. Cosy Italian-Icelandic restaurant with excellent fish, puffin and enormous pizzas. It’s decorated with photographs recalling Heimaey’s fishing history and has a charming atmosphere.

KK Lundinn, Kirkuvegur 21, T 481 3412. From 1100. Smart pub serving all kinds of snacks, pizza and more substantial fish and meat dishes.

KK Pizza 67, Heiðavegur 5, T 481 1567. Sun-Thu 1130-2200, Fri-Sat 1130-2300. Another of the chain, this time in a small cosy pub sheltered from the elements with reasonably priced pizzas and student discounts.

K Bakery and Konditori, Kökuhús, Bárustígur 7. 1100-1700. Small smart bakery with a café serving coffee, reasonably priced sandwiches and baked goods.
