Because Reykjavík is both Icelands capital and marooned in a wild open space, there are a huge number of sporting activities available here from the more refined ice-skating, badminton and spectator sports to activities on glaciers, under lava and on horseback. One thing that you shouldnt miss while youre in Iceland is the swimming. There are seven pools in Reykjavík alone, all geothermally heated, not counting a beach, the Blue Lagoon and a hot mountain spring in the central highlands, at Landmannalaugar. Both Lara Croft and James Bond have been seen romping around out here, in Tomb Raider and Die Another Day respectively, enough to prove that skidooing and dog sledding arent going out of fashion. Many of the tour operators offer day trips to glaciers including these activities and you should only attempt them with a guide, for obvious reasons. Fishing and riding equipment brought into the country must be fully disinfected and carry a vets certificate.
