There are a huge number of trips you can take from Reykjavík into the interior, either in a group or by hire car. Some of them come with CD guides so youre not missing out on the spiel. Other more specialist trips require either experienced guides or nerves of steel on the unsurfaced roads. Tours are busy in the high season (June-September) and are informative and interesting. The best manage not to make you feel too much like a herd of sheep in the way that organized coach tours can. You will get the occasional stop at tourist shops though, but thats to be expected. For more specialized tours, including Icelandic pony trekking. Arctic Experience, T 01737 218801, http://www.arctic-experience.co.uk, offer good-value year-round packages to Iceland and Greenland.
