You can be picked up at your hotel for an additional ISK 500 if you don’t fancy the walk or taking the bus. You’ll be taken out into Faxaflói Bay with a view of Snæfellsjökull, Akranes and the steam from the Blue Lagoon on a good day. Typically you might see minke whales and dolphins as well as the occasional blue whale, and if you don’t see anything you get a ticket for a free trip another day. A round trip is three hours long and takes in Lundey (Puffin Island) on the way back. This is the only place in Reykjavík where you’ll see a puffin, apart from in a restaurant. There are around 10,000 breeding pairs on this tiny island alone.

Whale watching tours are scheduled from the old harbour in Reykjavik from beginning of April through October. Whales most frequently seen on tours with Elding are the Minke whales, Humpback whales, Dolphins and Porpoises other speces are sometimes spotted. Exclusive Tours Wales in the midnight sun The midnight sun and the nature of the bay Faxafloi provide a unique wildlife experience. A trip out on the bay at night in midsummer is unforgettable experience.

Húni II is a 100-seater wooden boat used for three- to four-hour whale watching tours in Faxaflói bay. The boat was rescued from a New Year's bonfire for renovation and is a romantic way to see the whales and birdlife of the area. Midnight sun cruises can be arranged as well as fishing trips. A whale-watching trip costs ISK 3000 and hotel pick-up in Reykjavík is an additional ISK 650.

From Húsavík Norður Sigling, Gamli Baukur, 640 Húsavík, T 464 2350, F 464 2351. Adults ISK 3600, children 7-14 ISK 1800, under 7s free. The older of the Húsavík companies, making three- hour tours of the bay on a wooden-hulled former herring boat and a former shark-hunting boat. Trips run at 1330 daily year round, and up to four times a day June-August.

Hvalaferðir, Garðarsbraut 6, 640 Húsavík, T 464 2551, F 464 2212. Adults ISK 3000. A newer company running three hour tours of the bay in an oak hulled boat. They also run once daily all year, at 1300, and up to four times a day June-August. Additionally from 15 June-15 July midnight sun tours from 2330.
