Whether youre planning to spend hours trawling bars in search of the most authentic cante jondo or just want to briefly experience what its all about, its likely youll want to see some flamenco while youre in Seville. While much of whats on offer is geared to tourists (although frequently of a very high technical standard), its still possible to track down a more authentic experience. Although its far from true to say flamenco is the only cultural form on offer in Seville, it is probably correct to say its popularity has hindered the development of other types of drama, dance, and music in the city.
While Seville has a handful of theatres, its certainly not the place to come for opera and ballet. That said, what drama exists is generally of a high standard, and many of the cafés and bars around the Alameda de Hércules put on regular, low-key cultural events. Your best guide to upcoming events is El Giraldillo, (http://www.elgiraldillo.es) Cultura en Seville is another free publication worth checking as is The Tourist (all available at tourist offices).
