Bulebar Café, Alda de Hércules 82, T 954 901 954. 1300-0100. One of several good choices on this long promenade, the Bulebar has a nice little terrace and is decorated with rows of coloured disks. Its a popular meeting point for an alternative set and has a relaxed feel about it. Café del Mar, C Jesús del Gran Poder 83. 1600-0200 (Fri-Sat 0400). A cool and stylish set hang out here which is a coffee stop by day and chill-out zone by night. Relaxed but elegant furnishings and likeable staff. Attracts a mixed crowd. Café Hércules, C Peris Mencheta 15. 1200-2400 (weekends 0200). Small bar which attracts a weekend crowd substantially bigger than it. The chatty alternative set spill onto the pavement downing cubatas and munching on small bar snacks until lateish. Friendly vibe. El Goloso en Llamas, C Conde de Barajas s/n. 1200-1500, 1900-0100. A curious mixture of a place but a relaxing spot for a drink away from the marcha of the Alameda. The walls are decorated with sci-fi posters, but the comfortable tables have candles and a romantic atmosphere. El Imperdible, Pl San Antonio de Padua 9, T 954 388 219. A good leftish café-bar in La Macarena with plenty of students and frequent, diverse events such as poetry readings, live music or art exhibitions. El Lokal, C Alvaro de Bazán 6. A committed leftist and anarchist meeting place and bar with frequent politically aware gigs and events. Just off the Alameda de Hércules. Habanilla Café, Alameda de Hércules 63, T 954 902 718. 1200-0300. Nice, old double-storeyed building with a balcony and tiled interior. Drop in for coffee during the day or take advantage of a decent spirit selection by night. One of three good bars next to each other. Naïma Café Jazz, C Trajano 47, T 954 382 485. Just off the Alameda de Hércules, this relaxed and popular weekend jazz bar opens at 2400 and stays open until 0500 or later as long as theres plenty of folk around. Taberna Baños, C Baños 34. Wed-Sun 2000-0100. A relaxed, not-too-crowded barrio bar where locals gather. With good reason too; they make cracking caipirinhas (order them with cachaça for the real Brazilian taste) and have a very good pool table, so there can be no dodgy cue excuses for poor play.
